I am thrilled to announce that Greg Basura MD, PhD, an experienced neurotologist, educator, and funded surgeon-scientist, will join our faculty on September 1. Dr. Basura is currently an Associate Professor with Tenure at the University of Michigan Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He completed a PhD at Wayne State University, medical school at the University of Washington, residency at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and an otology-neurotology fellowship at the University of Michigan. He is currently pursuing an MBA at the Johns Hopkins University Carey School of Business.

Dr. Basura will add to our outstanding basic and translational research program in auditory sciences led by Thanos Tzounopoulos, PhD and Peter Santa Maria, MD, PhD. He will be a key member of the Pittsburgh Hearing Research Center in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. His research, funded through the NIH NIDCD, focuses on human translational studies using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate central auditory pathways in unilateral sudden hearing loss and tinnitus.

Dr. Basura is a leader in global otolaryngology outreach and has worked to develop sustainable educational and clinical initiatives in underserved nations. He is the current Chair of the Humanitarian Committee for the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Along with Drs. Johan Fagan and Tashneem Harris in Capetown, South Africa, Dr. Basura helped launch the first otology fellowship in Africa and continues to work closely with the fellows through online education and biannual trips to South Africa. In addition to his clinical and research roles, Dr. Basura will lead global otolaryngology efforts for the University of Pittsburgh Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, including oversight of our international educational programs and ongoing work in South Africa, Mozambique, and Peru.
