OTO Hires Microvascular Surgeon

Headshot of Dr. Spector

In October, the Department of Otolaryngology will have a new leader in microvascular surgery for the head and neck cancer group. Matt Spector will be Director, Head and Neck Surgical Oncology & Microvascular Reconstruction Fellowship; Chief, Division of Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgery; and Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.

“I bring 10 years of ablative oncology and reconstructive experience at the University of Michigan,” Dr. Spector said. “Head neck reconstruction is technically complex. Think about the importance of our appearance, speaking, and swallowing to our every day lives. Head neck cancer affects all these functions, and restoring the best possible functional and cosmetic outcome is paramount.”

Dr. Spector cited the amazing reputation of Pittsburgh Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery as the main draw to Pittsburgh. His parents went to Carnegie Mellon as well as his two brothers, so he has always loved the city.

Among his goals are to build a world class head and neck oncology and reconstructive program that attracts top tier residents and fellows to train the next generation of leaders in the specialty. “We are also going to leverage the resources at UPMC to innovate and improve outcomes in reconstructive microsurgery,” Dr. Spector added.
