OTO Alum Named Dean

An alum of the Department of Otolaryngology has been named Dean of the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Jeffrey R. Bumpous, MD, is also the university’s new Executive Vice President of Health Affairs as well as President of the American Board of Otolaryngology.

Dr. Bumpous was a Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine from 1993 to 1994.

“This is NO DOUBT predicated upon the superb mentorship, education, and support that I have received from both of you,” Dr. Bumpous wrote to Drs. Johnson and Myers, Chairmen Emeritus of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. “I am eternally grateful for time in Pittsburgh, and any success that I have achieved pays tribute to the terrific mentorship, friendship, and support that I have received.”

The otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon has served as the University of Louisville’s Interim School of Medicine Dean and Vice President of Academic Medical Affairs since June 2023. He earned his medical degree from the University of Louisville and has been a faculty member there since 1994. He is the J. Samuel Bumgardner Professor and Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Communicative Disorders and an Associate Clinical Director at University of Louisville Health – Brown Cancer Center.

In his new position, Dr. Bumpous will provide strategic leadership and financial oversight for the medical school and its academic programs, clinical activities, and research. He will also strengthen the partnership with the University’s primary provider affiliate, University of Louisville Health, one of Louisville’s largest employers.
