The U.S. News and World Report released its 2024-2025 Best Hospitals rankings. UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside ranked in nine specialties and is rated high performing in three.
While UPMC has made significant progress on mortality and several quality measures, most of the rankings are based on a three to five year rolling average with a lag time of up to two years.
Of the specialties, Ear, Nose, and Throat was previously ranked 44 and is now ranked 19 – a significant jump. It will likely continue to climb, since the 2022 addition of Dr. José P. Zevallos, The Eugene N. Myers, M.D. Professor and Chair, Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, has galvanized the Department.
“This significant jump in our ranking reflects our Department’s efforts to always focus on patient safety and outcomes, while taking on the most challenging and complex cases,” said Dr. Zevallos.
Additionally, rankings for the Doximity Residency Program were released late last week. The Department is ranked 13 nationally and 4th for research output.
“The pieces are coming together to make this one of the best places to train in the world,” said Dr. Noel Jabbour, Residency Program Director. “While rankings act as a nudge for the top medical students to check out our program, it is the culture and the quality of our residents and the commitment of our faculty to their success that is allowing us to recruit the best residents in the country to join our team.”
Talented faculty have joined the Department, enhancing clinical programs and introducing new and exciting lines of investigation. In 2022, the Department ranked number two in the nation in NIH funding among Otolaryngology Departments. The Department is a leader in surgical innovation and entrepreneurship. Many areas – like the Facial Nerve Center, Skull Base Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery and Microvascular Reconstruction – are rapidly growing, and the campaign to create the Pittsburgh Hearing Institute is just getting started.
