It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Gary N. Foulks, a distinguished ophthalmologist and esteemed member of the medical community. Dr. Foulks served as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh from 1995 until 2001. He was renowned for his tireless commitment towards teaching and research, his compassionate service to countless patients throughout his illustrious career, and his warm, jovial manner.

Dr. Foulks leaves behind a legacy of excellence, having inspired generations of medical professionals with his expertise and passion for improving eye health. His contributions to clinical research, particularly in corneal diseases and dry eye, have been invaluable. Dr Foulks was a remarkable scientist and an excellent clinician.

“Gary embodied the qualities of a southern gentleman – good manners, kindness and consideration, and thoughtfulness,” remembers Dr. Jake Waxman, who was recruited by Gary Foulks to lead the residency program. “He was a man of honor and a strong advocate for patients, trainees, and the profession.”

Another colleague shared their thoughts. “Gary Foulks was one of the most distinguished cornea academics, known for his many significant contributions to the field of ocular surface, including dry eye disease and other forms of chronic immune-mediated disorders of the cornea and conjunctiva.” said Professor Reza Dana, Claes H. Dohlman Chair in Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School and Director, Cornea Service, Massachusetts Eye & Ear. “Despite his many accomplishments, Gary was humble, affable and always approachable. He left his mark on the field not only through training many leading ophthalmologists over the years but also as someone who collaborated closely with industry in the planning of clinical trials for various therapeutics that millions of patients now enjoy.”

We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Foulks’ family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, and his impact on the field of ophthalmology will continue to be felt for years to come.
