The UPMC Center for Cranial Base Surgery has released a Journey to Excellence 13-part series on YouTube, thanks to the Global Rhinology Network (GRN).

GRN – a registered academic nonprofit organization in the UK with a mission to foster surgical training in the field of rhinology and skull base surgery – had done similar programs involving other institutions. Dr. Garret Choby, MD, described GRN as “an international group who seeks to understand well established skull practices to learn their history, members, techniques, and advice.”

GRN wanted to highlight UPMC due to its central role in the development of skull base surgery.

“Since they were attending our skull base course, they used that opportunity to interview our team,” explained Dr. Carl Snyderman, MD, MBA, Co-Director, UPMC Center for Cranial Base Surgery. “We then designed a one-day curriculum including live surgery to fill out the program.”

In addition to Drs. Snyderman and Choby, the series features team members Paul Gardner, MD, Eric Wang, MD, FACS, and Georgios Zenonos, MD. GRN directed questions and topics in the interviews, but the lectures were provided by the UPMC team. “We mostly wanted to discuss topics pertinent to aspiring skull base surgeons and add some of our own spin,” Dr. Choby said.

Topics include ventral approach corridors to the skull base, endoscopic skull base surgery outcomes, and quality of life.

The live episodes were broadcast to thousands of delegates across 120+ countries. Now the content has been divided into chapters to be more user friendly. Viewers can access any of the episodes at their own time and pace.
