As we welcome the new class of Ophthalmology residents, each newsletter will feature a profile. This month’s is Sean Ghiam, whose interest in ophthalmology developed through a combination of patient experiences, research, and an appreciation for the precision of microsurgery.
“I was drawn to a specialty that uniquely combines cutting-edge technology, surgical precision, and long-term patient relationships, offering the opportunity to make a meaningful and lasting impact on patients’ quality of life,” Dr. Ghiam said. He added that his research in ophthalmology has further deepened his passion for the field and reinforced his commitment to pursuing it as a career.
Dr. Ghiam’s decision to choose Pitt was shaped by firsthand experience. He was continually impressed with the Department’s collaborative culture, commitment to education, and pursuit of clinical and scientific excellence. “The combination of exceptional clinical and surgical training with an environment that values curiosity, research, and mentorship made Pitt the ideal place to continue my training and grow into the ophthalmologist I aspire to become,” he said.
While Dr. Ghiam has not yet decided on his ultimate career path, he knows he wants research, teaching, and mentorship to remain integral parts of his career. “Regardless of where I practice, my goal is to provide compassionate, patient-centered care while continuing to advance the field of ophthalmology,” he said.
Dr. Ghiam has a BS in Psychobiology from UCLA and obtained his medical degree from the Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University. His research experience includes work at Cedars-Sinai, the UCLA Stein Eye Institute, and the University of Pittsburgh, where he has contributed to peer-reviewed publications in ophthalmology. Dr. Ghiam has also participated in global health initiatives and community outreach focused on patient education and care.
