Jerome Finkelstein, MD, FACS, is retiring from the Department of Ophthalmology at the end of the 2026 calendar year. He joined the Department in 2021 and serves as Executive Vice Chair of Clinical Operations; Clinical Associate Professor; Chief of Ophthalmology at UPMC Mercy and Presbyterian Shadyside; and Physician Lead, Ophthalmic Technician Training Program.
Dr. Finkelstein said he is grateful for the opportunity to help grow the Department, which is now ranked #12 in the nation. “Our faculty has over doubled in size since I started here, largely due to the vision and leadership of our Chair, Dr. Sahel,” he added.
Dr. Finkelstein expects the Department to continue to flourish, and its national and international ranking and reputation continue to climb. He called the research and clinic programs top in the nation.
“We are one of an elite group of ophthalmology departments in the country with a first-class stand-alone facility dedicated to all aspects of vision research, teaching, and clinical care, supported by top tier faculty,” Dr. Finkelstein said. “I am proud to be a part of this Department, its accomplishments, and its upward trajectory.”
