From the Chair, October 2026

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

This issue of Otovation reflects the breadth of our mission and the people who continue to move our Department forward. Across research, clinical innovation, outreach, education, and philanthropy, our work is united by a commitment to improve care and outcomes for patients.

Our research spotlight underscores the importance of bringing survivorship care to patients earlier in their cancer journey. We also celebrate innovation through ClearView-Jaw, recognized as the graduate winner of the Collegiate Inventors Competition, and the continued commitment of our faculty and audiology teams to the community through Mission of Mercy.

This issue also gives us an opportunity to recognize the extraordinary contributions of our colleagues, including national and institutional honors for Joseph M. Furman, MD, PhD, FAAN, and Marci Lee Nilsen, PhD, RN, CHPN, FAAN. We highlight the campaign to name the forthcoming Head & Neck Cancer Institute in honor of Eugene N. Myers, MD, FACS, FRCS, Edin (Hon), whose legacy continues to shape our Department, as well as The Sustainable Surgeon podcast series, which extends important conversations about sustaining a career in our field.

Taken together, these stories demonstrate what is possible when discovery, patient care, education, service, and collaboration reinforce one another. I am grateful to our faculty, trainees, staff, partners, and supporters whose work makes this progress possible, and I hope you enjoy this issue of Otovation.
