Al Muse, a founding member of the Eye & Ear Foundation, passed away on May 16 at the age of 89.
Al was educated at Shadyside Academy and The Lawrenceville School before earning his degree from Princeton University. Following his graduation, he joined the family’s energy business, Crown Coal & Coke – now known as the Muse Company, where he was president.

Al’s dedication to healthcare innovation was evident throughout his life. He joined the Board of the Eye & Ear Hospital in 1969, serving as its president for 10 years. During this time, he worked to build the hospital’s endowment. When the Board decided to sell, Al ensured that the funds from the sale were preserved to support the fields of ophthalmology and otolaryngology. The result was the creation of the Eye & Ear Institute.
For many years, the Institute performed extraordinary research within both disciplines as a stand-alone entity. Eventually, with Al’s participation, it was determined the research performed at the Institute would be better served under the wing of the University of Pittsburgh. Again, Al insisted the funds from the sale would best serve the research and community by staying within a Foundation to support that research.
“Each step of the way, Al reminded us of our responsibility as guardians for these research dollars,” said Larry Gumberg, who served on the Eye & Ear Foundation Board with him. “With his help and leadership, we have an incredible resource in the Eye & Ear Foundation.”

Al served as chairman and vice chairman of the Eye & Ear Foundation and remained an active board member until his passing.
“I am an active board member because the Foundation is so important to the two Departments, supplying them with the funds enabling them to attract the best doctors and researchers, which has made them into the very top tier of Departments in the country,” he said.
To honor Al’s 60+ years of dedication and active service to the Eye and Ear Hospital, the Institute, and to the Foundation, and to recognize the world’s leaders in the fields of ophthalmology and otolaryngology, the Eye & Ear Foundation established the Albert C. Muse Prize for Excellence in Research and Advancement of Care in Ophthalmology/Otolaryngology in 2001. They also established the Albert C. Muse Award for Excellence in Innovation and Service in Ophthalmology/Otolaryngology. The award alternates each year between the two fields and carries a cash prize.
“The Muse Prize is a testament to his legacy,” said Dr. José-Alain Sahel, Ophthalmology Chair. “His presence among us was an inspiration, his ethics an example, and his kindness a constant encouragement.”

Al was a man of many passions who cherished spending time with his family and friends in Ligonier and Muskoka, Canada. He loved skiing, golf, and exploring the world, with Southern France holding a special place in his heart due to his time stationed there during the Navy.
Gumberg recalled Al’s philanthropy and great interest in medical advancements. “Al’s dedication and passion for the Eye & Ear Foundation will always be remembered,” added Lawton Snyder, Eye & Ear Foundation CEO. “His legacy will continue to inspire us all.”
